The Whadjuk People and Traveling Humanely

I opened my computer to a beautiful picture of an ocean wave off the coast of Rottnest Island. Most times I admire the photo, maybe oooh and aaah, and then move on to my purpose for being on my computer. That day, I was too intrigued so I clicked the beautiful picture to find out more. I found that Rottnest Island is a significant tourist attraction in Australia, an island that no cars are allowed on. But, there was more. It was historically a prison island. My mind's eye immediately saw folks frolicking and having fun on the soil where people suffered.

I already knew, but I had to find out WHO was imprisoned on Rottnest Island. You know too, yes Aboriginal people, original people of Australia, named Whadjuk.

There are so many beautiful places we have visited and will visit. This serves as a reminder to me, and I wanted to share with you, to travel responsibly.

Seek out the history, especially the history of people indigenous to the land. Acknowledge the people and their history while there (pour libation, do prayers, support local indigenous people, honor them and their sacrifices to maintain harmony and balance between humanity and the environment...). Visit http://gocultural.com.au and let's travel y'all!
